Dear all,

I am currently trying to organise an internal briefing on copyright and this has raised questions about copyright compliance. I am therefore interested in discovering whether or not your library functions as a separate legal entity to its parent institutions?

My understanding is that the Library here is covered by Tate’s CLA Public Administration Licence. This is the licence for central government, local authorities and public bodies – Tate being a non-departmental public body.

Our Copyright manager thinks otherwise – namely we can only carry out library services as a library if we are a separate entity – otherwise we must comply as a gallery only. This would substantially alter what we offer. As services provided by the Library are governed by the licence, e.g. scan + send for journal articles, it is important to know that we are complying and are covered by the relevant licence.

I would be grateful if you could let me know what happens at your institutions.

Many thanks,

Dear Colleagues,

Please find attached the summary report of the M25 / MLAG e-books survey which took place in the summer. Also attached is a ‘possible next steps’ document, which has been produced for MLAG and M25 by JISC Collections.

This will be an agenda item at the next MLAG committee meeting (December 15th) where possible next steps will be considered, including the possibility of taking forward a patron-driven acquisition model.

I would like to thank the other members of the Task and Finish Group who have worked on this: John Tuck (Royal Holloway); Kate Price (Surrey University); Anna Grigson (Royal Holloway); and in particular Anna Vernon (JISC Collections) who analysed the returns, compiled the reports and provided a wealth of expertise.

Any comments or feedback ahead of the MLAG committee meeting would be most welcome, either via the MLAG discussion list or blog.

Kind regards,

options for the structure of future meetings. We will be considering
the number of meetings, what form these will take, and other issues such
as should there be an elected committee for MLAG? Our aim is to come up
with a number of solutions that will enable current and new members to
get the most out of MLAG. We will meet once or twice in the next six
months and present to the MLAG meeting on the 22nd March, 2012.

As you’re probably aware from our dropping ‘London’ from the name of the group, MLAG wants to attract a wider UK membership and to identify potential members or groups to extend its reach. We’re now looking for two or three volunteers who can help with a mapping exercise to identify new members. From looking at the mission and guiding principles of MLAG, the plan is to come up with some recommendations and alternative models (3 proposed, 1 of which is recommended) to present at the MLAG meeting in March 2012.

If you’re interested in getting involved, please contact either Helen Pye-Smith (helen.pye-smith@nationalarchives.gsi.gov.uk) or Eleanor Gawne (EGawne@nmm.ac.uk) by 7 October. We are planning to meet to start our discussions on the morning of 19 October.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Eleanor Gawne

The MLAG Events and Training Working Group is organising a seminar to take place later in 2011 and we would like your help.
The seminar will investigate the importance of working together – both within an individual institution and more widely in partnership with other Museums. The underlying theme will be how an archive and library service can achieve a greater profile within its parent organisation.
The seminar will address what can be done by archives and library departments to meet the current challenges faced by the profession. It will offer a chance to discuss successful initiatives and concerns in a positive and supportive environment. The seminar will highlight the issues arising from the current economic climate and how services have adapted to respond to these issues. Where innovation has thrived in the face of adversity speakers might discuss enterprises that did not previously exist or that have worked particularly well.
This informal event will be of interest to all MLAG members whether you represent a large or a small organisation; whether you are a senior manager or new to the museum sector – we all have a role to play in fighting our corner.
We would like to invite MLAG members who are interested in speaking at the seminar to contact us. Expressions of interest, along with a short outline of your proposed topic, should be sent to Richard Wragg at rwragg@nmm.ac.uk. A date for the seminar will be agreed in the next few months but is likely to be September or October 2011. To ensure the seminar is useful to as many members as possible we would also like to hear of any specific topics you think should be covered. Ideas can be sent to the address above or, better yet, why not comment via the blog.
MLAG Events and Working Group
24 January 2011
